like a plot out of a tom clancy cold war novel. a rove navy sailor is suspected of telling top-secret submarine tracking technology to the russians. nbc affiliate reporter andy fox with wavy has this story. >> reporter: robert hoffman appeared in court wearing a t-shirt with a rooster on it with the words "born to fight," in reference to cock fighting. mr. hoffman, did you try to sell government secrets? just a big smirky smile from hoffman, who retired a year ago and is trained as a navy cryptologic technician. he is able to find submarines using sophisticated direction-finding technology. the indictment reads hoffman had access to top-secret information which could cause exceptionally grave damage to national security. on october 21st, hoffman is accused of delivering secret information to people he believed to be officials with the russian federation on how to track u.s. submarines using the technology he learned on the job working for the navy. the information included the technology and procedures required to find the subs. hoffman delivered that information to fbi agents

president ronald reagan of creating a shadowy government with its own navy and air force, free from the law itself. he was right. in 2000, it was the senator who was among the tiny group of senators to vote against the authorization for the use of military force in iraq. despite the support of a popular president of his own party in 1996, it was senator inouye who took a stand and voted no on the defense of marriage act. he will lie in state on thursday. that is usually an honor reserved for former presidents of the united states. it has also been over the years accorded to a very few distinguished members of congress. and if he is not considered distinguished it is hard to imagine who would be. the passing of the senator opens up a seat in the state. the seat must be to a member of the party of the senator who has died. so the democratic party in hawaii in the next few weeks will submit to the governor a list of three potential nominees to serve out the next two years of senator inouye's term. the government will present a choice presented by the party. and democrats in hawaii don't have a

.s. scaneagle drone which entered iranian air space over the persian gulf. the very powerful navy chief of the revolutionary guard said iran used jamming systems to bring down the drone which had taken off from usa aircraft carrier in the region and was on a reconnaissance mission gathering data over iran and state tv showed two revolutionary guard commanders expecting what seems to be an impact scaneagle drone in front of a huge map of the persian gulf and hon it written, we will trammell america under our feet. as you said the u.s. denies any drone had gone missing but we had a similar incident last year where iran had jammed and downed a u.s. drone in the same region. the u.s. denied a drone had been down. after a few days they admitted the drone had been downed by the iranians and asked for it back. the iranians wouldn't give the drone back, but they said that they would make a model of it and send it to the united states. they put that model for sale in iran which we managed to get a copy of, to much fanfare. this was on sale all over iran last year. we might see another copy of it

, the president is the stewart of the overall economy. you learn that in the navy as the captain of a ship. at the same time, both parties need to look and see that both speaker boehner and president obama did come close to a principaled compromise. i think they both have good intentions for the future of america's economy at heart. they were $500 billion away from a $2.5 trillion agreement. if they can both come forward a little bit more, president obama more on spending reductions including entitlement reform, he did do some and mr. boehner, speaker boehner coming forward not just $1 million having a tax raise, those earning $400,000 to $500,000, you can get the grand bargain. it's not what we are talking today. get the fiscal cliff to where you change the scale to a bunny slope, where the skier can pick up speed, accelerate the economy up to 3%, only reducing the debt reduction down 200 billion. then with the surging economy, you get $3 trillion in february before the debt limit is broken, then the economy is so strong it can take the grand compromise and roar into the next nine years.

could have hired navy s.e.a.l.s to come in and do a better job. they did everything that they were trained and hoped to do. we locked the doors. they have cameras on them. we have security officers. in some cases we have full on police officers in larger schools they have police forces. this was a deranged individual. and he hurt us as a nation. but i think what's also important is to understand that from this tragedy we're going to see that we as a state and as a country are going to come together and make sure that the folks here in newtown get every single thing that we can provide them. we can't get them their children back. but we can let them know that they are loved and supported and we're going to be there for them throughout the holidays and beyond. >> steve, what about the survivors? all the kids that heard and saw things that they will never forget. at what point does their ability to learn, their development, all of that suffer? i mean, can they ever get back to what they were? >> that's the tough part. that's the tough part. no one knows the impact of a tragedy on a ch
